Our sweet little granddaughter has big peepers that remind us of her father's eyes when he was born. She will sleep among her Pooh friends for the first time tonight. Well. We hope she sleeps! And her name is just perfect:

Week #40: Meet the Newest Member of our Family!
There are few words to describe the precious gift that our family has received. Our beautiful granddaughter made her debut at 8:25 P.M. (PST) on Thursday, June 13, 2013 . . . all of 6 lbs., 8 oz, and 20 inches long. She and her mom are both doing well.

Week #38 Keep Calm - It's the Final Countdown
Yesterday was the last day of work for Baby Girl Mulvaney's mom. I think she really likes her job, but I also know that she is READY and she's definitely looking forward to spending the next few months being a working mom at home. I do hope that she gets a little rest before the big "birth"day! Right now it's probably difficult to get a full night's sleep, so a little nap by the pool might be nice.
When I was talking to my daughter-in-law last night, she actually asked me if I wanted to know "THE NAME." "You wanna know? I'll tell you! I'll tell you now." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Of course not! Not now!
I must say though, my creative juices are not flowing and my blogging days will soon be over. At this point I'm gonna go undercover and keep calm because it's the final countdown. And the next time you hear from me, it'll be all about "THE NAME". In the meantime, I'm going the way of Mumford and Sons. I will wait.

Week #37: Is This a Real Hint or Are You Just Playin'?
Well it's Week #37 and the final countdown is on! Exactly one month from today we will be making our journey to the West Coast to meet our sweet little granddaughter and reunite with her wonderful parents. She is one lucky little girl as family and friends have already showered her mom and dad with many thoughtful and useful gifts in preparation for her arrival. The cubbies in her beautifully decorated room are stuffed with adorable toys, books and CDs and I am imagining that her closet already rivals her mom's. ("Every girl needs a blazer," right, Aunt Kathleen?)
Speaking of her mom.... this week's name was actually suggested by Baby Girl Mulvaney's mother! I don't know if it's "the one", but for sure it's a name that has special meaning for BGM's mom and her family. It has strong biblical roots and is derived from a Hebrew name, meaning "oath of God" or "God is satisfaction". In the New Testament, this is the name of John the Baptist's mother. Then there's "The Queen". And the beautiful movie star with the violet eyes. And if those aren't enough hints, let's just say this week's name is a thoughtful tribute to Baby Girl Mulvaney's west coast aunt, her mom's sister, who is sure to be one of her biggest fans!
West Coast Aunt and BGM's Mom
There are very few songs out there that reveal the "full name" but the one that BGM's mom suggested captures one of its many derivatives. While this song was composed by Larry Williams in 1958, it was actually made famous by the Beatles ten years later on their Help! album. Who knows... BGM's parents have been pretty tight-lipped, but could this be a HINT? It won't be long before we find out, folks!

Week #36: A Quick Re-Cap and an SOS from Wile E. Coyote!
Ruby ...Cecilia...Caroline...Valentina...Claribel...
Maria...Corinna...Molly...Grace...Lily...
Tessie...Rosalinda...Lucy...Maggie...Winnie. . .
Of those names, my favorite is probably Caroline. It's that Neil Diamond thing. It's the Red Sox. It's that Kennedy connection. If you're from Massachusetts, you know what I mean.
For now, I'm gonna tap into the wisdom and thoughtfulness of the paternal grandfather-to-be. For once, I will ask him for his opinion and really pay attention to it! At this point, I need all the help I can get!
Grandpa's choice reflects that melancholy, Irish side of him which he relishes. It's a name of Hebrew origin which means "delicate or weary." Biblically, it is also the name of Jacob's first wife, who became the mother of Dinah and six of Jacob's twelve sons. Who else has this name? My school secretary (who he empathizes with whenever he sees her), and the fictional princess of Star Wars.
So here you go .... a little suggestion from a very blessed and happy grandfather-to-be all the way from beautiful Western Massachusetts - sung by one of his all-time favorite artists. (And yes, that's a young Bruce Springsteen on back-up guitar!)

Week #35: Happy Mother's Day, EQM!
Week #35. This Sunday, May 12th, will be EQM's first Mother's Day. Next year will definitely be more exciting for her with Baby Girl Mulvaney in her life, but let me be one of the first to wish EQM a very happy Mother's Day 2013!
Let's kick off Week #35 with a beautiful photo of the happy parents-to-be at their baby shower last weekend.
EQM's sister, Liz, and her boss and friend, Chris, planned and hosted the event at Chris's beautiful home in San Diego. I love the fact that it was a co-ed shower and I'm sure Matt did, too! Since Baby Girl Mulvaney's nursery has been decorated with a Winnie the Pooh theme, Chris and Liz added some really sweet "Pooh" touches to the event. So adorable! The "parents-to-bee" received lots of wonderful gifts from friends and family members, including some really nice books for their sweet baby girl. Her grandparents look forward to reading some of those books to her!
So with a June 12th due date fast approaching, there's not much time left for me to come up with that perfect name for Baby Girl Mulvaney. And I also know that her parents may not need or want my suggestions at this point.... but I can have fun, right? The parents-to-be certainly aren't giving us any hints, so let's just roll with this until Baby Girl Mulvaney arrives and we find out!
This week's choice of name has an obvious connection to the Pooh theme, and it would be a nice shout out to one of Matt's great-aunts, a retired kindergarten teacher, who is the kindest, sweetest lady ever. Its origin is primarily Welsh and the meaning is all encompassing: fair, pure, happiness, holy, blessed reconciliation, joy and peace, first born daughter. Wow! This name has it all! And believe it or not, the most famous individual with this name is a bear who happens to be Christopher Robin's best friend. Why not?

Week #34: And Now, For a Commercial Break
Sammy, Kathleen, Keith, Kayleigh, Sue and Steve
this weekend. My niece, Kayleigh, was married yesterday to a handsome fella at Ebbing Springs Church in Glade Springs, Virginia. My niece is a beautiful, sensitive, sweet soul and I wish her and her new husband, Keith, a lifetime of love, good health and happiness together. As if that weren't exciting enough, Kayleigh will top that off today with her graduation from Virginia Intermont College. Most of the McCormick family spent the weekend at the General Francis Marion or "The Lincoln" as the locals call it. The General Francis Marion is a beautifully restored roaring 20's hotel in Marion, Virginia, at the foothills of the Southern Appalachian Mountain range. The southern hospitality here has been wonderful and the landscape in these parts is quite pretty.... lots of rolling hills, green pastures dotted with cows and horses, and more churches than I have ever seen in one place. There's no question we're in the Bible Belt! Smoking is common in these parts, but drinking alcohol is a bit more "secretive". As one bumper sticker said, "I don't know Jack, but I do know Shine!" The wedding was dry, but have no fear, the McCormick family was here. We came prepared and drank our spirits, secretively, at the "dry" wedding. Grandma McCormick's purse was so heavy that I grabbed it from her moments before she was about to be escorted down the aisle so it wouldn't weigh her down! |
It is the day after the wedding and as I now sit with Steve, Kathleen and my nephew, Sam, in TriCities Airport in Blountville, Tennessee, my thoughts turn to Baby Girl Mulvaney, whose parents will be the guests of honor today at a baby shower in San Diego. Matt's sister and I would love to be there, but since that's not possible, we made sure that our presents have arrived on the West Coast and we send our love and best wishes to Elena and Matt for a wonderful day.
Back to the original purpose of my blog... suggesting a nice name for Baby Girl Mulvaney. With all that was going on this weekend, including our family celebrations, the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo, I had a lot of inspiration for names. But you know what? Being with family and watching my own children and my nieces and nephew grow up, graduate from college, get married and have children .... well it all makes me very nostalgic. Instead of proposing another name today, I have decided instead to share a special song that was commissioned for the Kentucky Derby about two years before Baby Girl Mulvaney's mom and dad were born. I listened to it frequently while I was pregnant, and later rocked my first born to sleep while this song played in the background on an antique radio. Years later, Dan Fogelberg's voice and beautiful lyrics still move me.
So I'm taking a commercial break this weekend to share the song that has such special meaning for me. Today it makes me reflect on the beautiful southern landscape that I was introduced to this weekend, and along with a wedding, a graduation, and a baby shower, the lyrics really resonate: "The chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance." It certainly is. Congratulations to the Bride and Groom, to the new college graduate, and to the parents-to-be. XOXO

Week #33: Names on the Family Tree
I'm not suggesting that Baby Girl Mulvaney be named after her raven haired cousin .... but the link certainly caught my attention! Don't you wonder if there's a song out there named after you?
ANSWER: YES! Actually, NO! I don't wonder. There are plenty of Susan, Susie, and Sue songs out there! Here's one from the Everly Brothers that was released in 1957, the year that this grandmother-to-be was born. To be honest, on more than one occasion, I had to endure this being sung way too loudly by many well-intentioned friends whenever it was played in our company. Sort of "in your face" singing, if you know what I mean . . .
FACTS: 1) Wake Up Little Susie was banned on Boston radio stations when it was released because of objectionable content of a sexual nature. (My, how times have changed.) 2) It is ranked as #311 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time; 3) While on the Presidential campaign trail in 2000, then Governor George W. Bush told Oprah that Wake up Little Susie was his favorite song.
Okay...my strong hunch is that Baby Girl Mulvaney's parents will choose something a little more unique and she will not be named after her female relatives ... at least not after her cousin or maternal grandmother. So let's just throw out another name this week that hasn't shown up yet on either the Mulvaney or Quevedo family trees, as far as I know.
The selection for Week #33 is rising in popularity due to renewed interest in "old-fashioned" names. While this name is of English etymology, the longer version is Greek in origin and means "pearl". This week's choice is also connected to the song that launched Rod Stewart's career as a solo performer. Without a doubt, it is one of the British rock star's best known songs.
Just seven more weeks to go, EQM and MSM, assuming that Baby Girl Mulvaney makes an on-time arrival. Personally, I like the song and I think this would be a sweet little name for your precious pearl. Just sayin'!

Week #32: Beatlemania, Peanuts and I LOVE (This Comedienne)!
Already it's Week #32! EQM is well past the baby "bump" stage and there's no mistaking her for being pregnant! She's lookin' good and I'm happy to report that she's feeling pretty well, too!
I would be remiss not to suggest at least one name inspired by the legendary Beatles, the most famous British pop rock band ever. The music of the Beatles includes at least two dozen songs that reference girls' names. Michelle is certainly one of my personal favorites, but a French name for a little girl born to a Cuban-American mom and an Irish/Portuguese dad just doesn't make any sense to me ... (and I actually did grow up with a girl by the name of Michelle Mulvaney, so that name is taken!)
Another of my favorite Beatles songs is reported to have a hidden reference to LSD. However, as the story goes, the lyrics were actually inspired by a nursery school drawing created by John Lennon's son, Julian. Thank you, Julian! I'm good with that.

This name, like so many others, is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "light." It's an extremely popular choice in both the United Kingdom and the United States, where it has firmly held its position on the list of the top 100 baby girls' names for the past several years. This is also the name of the bossy little girl in the Peanuts comic strip created by Charles Schulz. And we certainly can't forget the hilarious housewife portrayed in a TV sitcom by one of the most talented American comediennes of all time.
I'm sure you don't need any other hints to guess the name for Week #32! Could we soon have a bossy little girl or a hilarious little comedienne on our hands?

Week #31: Writer's Block.. Family Guy to the Rescue!
Okay. It's Week #31 and I'm coming up short on ideas for a nice name for Baby Girl Mulvaney. (And by the way, I realize that she probably already has a name, but that's beside the point.) I even resorted to Family Guy for inspiration this week. Parental Advisory: The following link contains profanity:
Please forgive me if you're offended. That's probably not a very grandmotherly link for a blog about naming sweet Baby Girl Mulvaney, but it definitely amused me! And in all honesty, the Griffin's dog, Brian, actually does have a few good suggestions.
So after more searching, I finally came up with a pretty sweet name for Week #31. The baby name websites out there are a bit confused. According to several, this name is of Germanic origin and means "gentle horse". No. Whoever wrote those websites obviously do not understand Spanish. This name, when translated into Spanish, means "Pretty Rose". And that's a really nice name for Elena and Matt's sweet little baby girl.
One of my all time favorite artists, Billy Joel, wrote the song. In an interview, he indicated that he penned it for his mother, and it was a song that his father should have written for her. Sweet. I love the music. I love the lyrics. And with her Cuban heritage from her mama's side of the family, we'll always find our Cuban skies in Baby Girl Mulvaney's eyes. Enjoy.

Week #30: A Name for the Newest Member of Red Sox Nation!
While the history of this name is a bit uncertain, it appears to be a diminutive of "Theresa" which may have first been used in Spain or Portugal. This is an interesting connection since some of baby Mulvaney's maternal and paternal relatives hail from the Iberian Peninsula. "Late summer" and "harvester" are two meanings that have been attributed to this unusual name.
So where is the connection to the Boston Red Sox? Well, this name is the title of a longtime Red Sox anthem which was resurrected in 2004 by the punk rock group, The Dropkick Murphys. The newer version of the song recounts how the tune became the rallying cry of a fan club known as the "Royal Rooters" which helped the Boston Americans win the World Series in 1903. The Dropkick Murphys brought the song alive again in 2004 and the rest is history! It is now the second of three songs played after every Red Sox win at Fenway Park, the first being Dirty Water by the
Standells and the third being Joy to the World by Three Dog Night.
This would be a perfect name for the newest little member of Red Sox Nation. Nuff said!

Week #29: Happy Easter, Y'all!
This week's name is represented by the traditional, fragrant flower that is a popular symbol of Easter. This flower name of Latin origin conveys innocence, purity and beauty. It also has a connection to Harry Potter. I haven't read or watched anything about Harry Potter, but I do pay attention to EQM's interests. It's no secret that she is a huge Harry Potter fan and I thought that just maybe she would be drawn to this name. In any case, it's a perfect choice for Easter and it could also be a really sweet name for Baby Girl Mulvaney.
In my weekly search for names that can be showcased musically, I've enjoyed listening to songs by many talented artists who were previously unknown to me. This week I realized that it was time to broaden my horizons and pay more attention to the country music scene after discovering award winning artist, Clint Black, who penned this beautiful lullaby for his baby daughter. I almost needed a box of Kleenix.

Week #28: Welcoming Spring with A "Virtue" Name
As we move into Week 28, spring is finally here! While the snow from late winter storms continues to melt in the northeast, spring promises welcome renewal from the cold, grey landscape. We anxiously await a burst of color and new life from Mother Nature. Think sunny trumpet daffodils, graceful pink tulips and vibrant hyacinths! In spring we can find beauty in everything.
The name that comes to mind this week is a very popular choice of Latin origin that is considered to be one of the "virtue" names. While it represents many things to people of different cultures, at its traditional core, this sweet but elegant name means "favor" or "blessing".
A beautiful American actress who became the Princess of Monaco bore this name. That's a pretty big hint, but if you're still curious, take a listen to these very tender verses sung by Dublin born Irish singer and humanitarian, Bono. It wouldn't surprise me if Baby Girl Mulvaney's parents have put this "thought that changed the world" at the top of their list. I just might hold out for this one.

Week #27: Keep Calm and Get Your Irish On!
Selecting this week's name was easy. It was clearly narrowed to a few choices that honor St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, whose feast day will be celebrated this weekend. This week's choice is a very popular name of Irish and Latin origin, and like a few other names of similar etimology, it means "star of the sea."
While St. Patrick's Day is not an official holiday in the United States, it may as well be in our family! The day has great significance for Baby Mulvaney's dad and many of her ancestors from the Emerald Isle, which include the Mulvaney, McCormick, Kennedy and Martin clans. In the Mulvaney and McCormick families, there are long standing traditions of how we celebrate St. Patrick's Day. This always includes the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Road Race and a full day and night spent at Grandma McCormick's house, just a few wee blocks from the site of the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade. It is definitely a special time of year that is always celebrated with lots of family, friends and good food (and drink) at Grandma's. Years ago, when asked to write about his favorite "holiday" for an elementary school assignment, Baby Mulvaney's dad wrote about some of those family traditions in his essay on St. Patrick's Day.
While there are many beautiful Irish girls' names, this particular one is highlighted in a sweet, melancholy song that is the official anthem of Dublin City, Ireland. It has a pretty tragic ending, but "alive, alive-o", the Irish have been known to cry in their beer! A statue dedicated to herself was unveiled on June 13, 1988 during Dublin's millenium celebrations. For you sports fans out there, this song is to the Leinster Irish Rugby team what "Sweet Caroline" is to the Boston Red Sox.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Sláinte!

Week #26: Inspiration from an Ancient Greek Poet
An ancient Greek poetess provides the inspiration for this week's name. This poet may have been born as early as 6 BC and most of her work is preserved only on papyrus fragments. (Papyrus. I think that's the greeting card company that EQM really likes.) The meaning of this name is "Maiden" and it should come as no surprise that its origin is Ancient Greek.
A hint for the musicians out there: This name peaked in popularity in the 1960's when Ray Peterson scored a Top 10 hit on the U.S. singles charts with his version of a country blues song first recorded by Bo Carter in 1928. I personally like the jazzy blues interpretation by Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton that they performed at the Lincoln Center in 2011. The spectacular collaboration by these two music virtuosos features the gruff and gritty vocals of Taj Mahal and a few outstanding instrumental solos by members of the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra.
There are actually no celebrities with this name so Baby Girl Mulvaney could be the first! Here are three versions of this pretty name: the original, the most popular and my personal favorite!

Week #25: We're Not Gonna Call Her "Twitter"!
So for Week 25 I'm noticing that there are certainly a lot of beautiful names to choose from but it's a challenge to find names that are captured in the title of a song. After a lot of searching, I've decided to go traditional this week and choose a beautiful name that is very common in both Spanish and non-Spanish speaking cultures. The etimology of this popular name, which has many variations, is Latin and it's meaning is Star of the Sea. This week's selection also gives a shout out to many of Baby Mulvaney's female relatives from the Quevedo, Mulvaney, McCormick and Fernandes families who proudly bear this name or some form of it.
Enjoy this classic selection by the amazing Carlos Santana which finds itself at #96 on the list of Top Ten of All Time, and #2 on the List of Top Latin Hits of All Time. What a fine name this would be!

Week 24: Bright, Famous and Beautiful..
The selection for Week #24 (of EQM's pregnancy) is of Latin origin, as is the case with many names I have found. It's meaning is bright, famous and beautiful. A very talented Nicaraguan poet, essayist, novelist and journalist from "La Generacion Comprometida" (the Committed Generation) bears this name. I don't personally know anyone else by this exact name, but here's a BIG hint for those of you who have some history with the Mulvaney family: When my children were ages, 4, 7 and 10, a high school student from Asturias, Spain lived with us for several months. Her name comes pretty close and she was certainly bright and beautiful (and still is)! I don't know about famous, but I'm confident that Baby Girl Mulvaney will be a star in our family and she will be bright and beautiful, no matter what her lucky parents decide to name her.
The music that introduces this week's name is just that: music and no words. French composer, Eugene Bozza, chose this name as the title for his elegant clarinet and piano duet. Bozza studied composition, conducting and violin at the Paris Conservatoire and is particularly noted for his wind compositions, having composed pieces for nearly all wind and string instruments (including the alto saxophone). I'm guessing that Baby Mulvaney's classical music loving daddy will enjoy this piece. Hopefully, Baby's Mom will too! And who knows ... maybe they will surprise us all and give bright and beautiful Baby Girl Mulvaney this lovely little name.

Week 23: A Spanish Lullaby for Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day was on Thursday and how could I pass up the opportunity to propose a name with such a lovely association? In the last decade, this beautiful name has been on the list of the
top 100 most popular girls’ names in both Europe and South America. It has been a particularly favored choice in
Colombia, where it takes top billing as the #1 most popular female name for the past ten years.
The etimology of this name is Latin and its meaning is "strong and healthy." Most of us know that St. Valentine is the patron saint of love and lovers, of young people and of happy marriages. But did you know that St. Valentine is also the patron saint of beekeepers? This would be a sweet name for our little “love bug”, who might enjoy this tender Spanish lullaby by Latin Grammy Award winner, Carla Morrison:

Week 22: A Solid Choice for Red Sox Fans!
If you've ever enjoyed the Red Sox experience at Fenway Park, you're undoubtedly familiar with Neil Diamond's 1969 soft rock classic that livens up Boston fans during the seventh inning stretch. Yup. You know this one! It's also the song that gets every Red Sox fan on their feet at a wedding, singing and dancing like they're rock stars (including the guests at Matt and Elena's wedding). A few beers or cocktails bring out the star quality in all of us.
I LOVE this name! So GOOD! So GOOD! So GOOD!

Week 21: A Name with Some History in the McCormick Clan!
WEEK 21 of the Countdown features a not so popular choice . . . in fact this name is downright UNPOPULAR! On a positive "note", the Patron Saint of Music bears this name, which is of Old Welch and Latin origin. Though it is uncommon choice for many, it is actually a popular choice in Matthew Mulvaney's family. Matt's maternal grandfather had an aunt by this name ... and Matt has an Aunt and a Great Aunt by the Gaelic/Irish version of this name... Sheila McCormick and Sheila Arsenault. Have you figured it out? Check out this well known1970's hit from Simon and Garfunkel!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5_QV97eYqM. You're going to call me what!?
TWENTY WEEK COUNTDOWN!
TWENTY WEEK COUNTDOWN! Take a listen to Week #20's Name of the Week. This "gem" of a name is of English origin and is currently the second most popular name in the United Kingdom. The first African American child to ever attend an all white elementary school in the south has this name. A thoughtful choice on the heels of Martin Luther King's Birthday!
